“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” The candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should gaze intently into the above aphorism before being swept into the ditch of political losers.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who is the candidate of the APC, and his major contender, the PDP man, Hon. Agboola Ajayi, are grappling with the exalted seat of the Sunshine State. One is severely striving to nip the aftermath of the primary election that named him candidate and its consequences in the bud, while the other needs to unite his party.
It is not yet Uhuru for Aiyedatiwa, whose sobriquet is Star Boy. Focusing on power and not putting a mark of finality on the crisis rocking the primary that produced him is very unhealthy for his aspiration.
Starnews NG recalls that Senator Jimoh Ibrahim approached the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, praying it to nullify the primary election the All Progressives Congress, APC, conducted in the state on April 20.
Senator Ibrahim is urging the court to void the nomination of the incumbent governor of the state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as the flag-bearer of the party for the gubernatorial contest billed for November 16.
Cited as defendants in the suit are the APC, Governor Aiyedatiwa, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Specifically, the plaintiff, who is currently representing Ondo South in the Senate, alleged that the primary election that produced Aiyedatiwa as the candidate of the APC for the governorship election was fraught with irregularities.
Apart from Jimoh, other aspirants have expressed their displeasure with the upshot of the election, calling for the implicit cancellation of the exercise.
We advise Aiyedatiwa to watch his back and focus on resolving the conundrum bedevilling his party by reconciling disgruntled aspirants who are his kinsmen.
In the same vein, Agboola Ajayi should also do more by uniting his party, especially some leaders who are displeased with the actions and inactions of the State Party Chairman, Alabere.
Similarly, he should stop the wave of defection sweeping members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party into the fold of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, both of them are advised to embark on an issue-based campaign and urge their respective supporters to toe the line for peace and tranquillity during and after the November 16 governorship election.
