Masari, Ganduje, others visit Ikoyi collapsed building site

Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari and his Kano State counterpart Abdullahi Ganduje and others dignitaries from the North yesterday visited site of the collapsed 21-storey building in the Ikoyi area of Lagos.

They were led to the site by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The delegation said it was in the state to commiserate with the people on the loss.

Masari said: “We are here representing governors of the Northwest to condole with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, bereaved families and Lagosians on the unfortunate incident.

“We cannot escape high-rise buildings in Lagos, but we must ensure they do not cost lives and properties. We are happy that the governor has instituted an inquiry tribunal that will unravel what happened here.

“There is little we can do but to once again console the Governor and people of Lagos State over the incident, and pray to God that such will not happen again. On behalf of the people of Northwest, accept our sincere condolences and sympathy.”

He said: ‘Lagos is a mega city. And comparing it to any other mega city in the world, and considering its peculiar features of lack of adequate land for development, increasing population, high density, constructing high rise buildings cannot be avoided. But it is unfortunate that we have found ourselves in this situation.”

Sanwo-Olu thanked his counterparts for the visit and appreciated them for the kind gesture. He added that their gesture showed that Lagos was not alone.
