A 45-year-old man in Indonesia allegedly killed his 60-year-old neighbour after becoming hurt and annoyed by the latter’s persistence in asking him why he was not married.
Indonesian media reported that the incident occurred in South Tapanuli regency, North Sumatra, on 29th July.
The victim, a retired civil servant named Asgim Irianto, was identified by the region’s Assistant Police Commissioner (AKP) Maria Marpaung on 31st July, according to the Indonesian media outlet Detik Jogja.
AKP Maria stated that, based on a statement provided by Mr Asgim’s wife, the attacker, Parlindungan Siregar, arrived at their home at around 8 pm on 29th July wielding a piece of wood and began attacking the victim without warning.
Mr Asgim ran into the street, where he was pursued by Parlindungan and struck on the head. After being felled, Mr Asgim was allegedly beaten further by Parlindungan.
Residents in the area eventually stopped the assault and rushed Mr Asgim to the hospital, but he died before reaching it, according to AKP Maria.
The police arrested Parlindungan within an hour of the attack, reported Kompas.
According to AKP Maria, Parlindungan stated during police questioning that he was determined to kill Mr Asgim because he was hurt by how frequently his neighbour asked him, in jest, why he was not married.
Prior to the fatal attack, the two neighbours had also reportedly argued when their chickens strayed into each other’s coops, according to Detik Jogja.
