Residents of the Edu area in the Idanyin community, located in the Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, were left stunned after an unidentified man reportedly collapsed and died on Sunday, according to PUNCH Metro.
On Monday, the Ogun State police command provided details about the incident, confirming that the man, thought to be in his late 40s, had passed away.
Police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, informed PUNCH Metro that the man was walking by a local shop when he suddenly fell unconscious.
Odutola elaborated that the shop owner, Iheadiri Blessing, witnessed the event as she stood in front of her store around noon on Sunday when the man collapsed nearby.
“Officers from the Divisional Crime Branch quickly responded to the scene after receiving the report,” Odutola stated.
She continued, “The man was taken to CEMA Medical Hospital in Edu Gasoline, but the attending doctor pronounced him dead upon arrival. Officers managed to contact his family using a phone found in his pocket.”
Family members arrived shortly after and, finding no evidence of foul play, requested that the body be released for burial in their village. The police granted their request and handed the remains over to the family.
“No formal complaints have been filed, and the area is tranquil. Our officers are maintaining surveillance to ensure peace and stability.”
In a related report, PUNCH Metro mentioned another unfortunate incident involving a 26-year-old woman, Toyin Balogun, who died under similar circumstances on Saturday.
Balogun was discovered gasping for breath in her apartment in the Gbokoniyi area of Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State. A neighbor had to forcefully enter her apartment after she did not respond to calls made while looking for a key belonging to another neighbor.
Police confirmed that Balogun was found with foam around her mouth. She was promptly taken to the hospital but was later declared dead.
