Man attempting to vandalise Lagos transformer electrocuted

Tragedy struck on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, on September 1, 2024, when an unidentified man was electrocuted while attempting to vandalize a PHCN transformer.

Reports from the Lagos State Police Command indicate that the incident occurred around 4:02 AM. A security officer stationed at a nearby company witnessed the event.

According to the officer, the man was seen climbing the gate next to the transformer, presumably to tamper with or vandalize the electrical equipment. Tragically, he was electrocuted and fell into the compound, where he died instantly.

The Lagos Police were alerted promptly, and an Anti-Crime Patrol team was dispatched to the scene. They conducted a thorough investigation, documenting the area and taking photographs. The PHCN office was also notified.

Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the fatal electrocution and highlighted the dangers of illegal activities involving electrical installations. “The individual, whose identity is still unknown, was electrocuted while attempting to vandalize a PHCN transformer. His remains have been moved to the mortuary, and we are continuing our investigation,” SP Hundeyin stated.

He warned against vandalism, especially involving high-voltage equipment, which poses severe risks to life and property. SP Hundeyin urged the community to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

The deceased’s body has been deposited in the mortuary while efforts to identify him and notify his next of kin are ongoing.
