Maria Ochefu, the woman who established Mammy Markets in military barracks across Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 86.
Her son, Professor Yakubu Ochefu, confirmed that she died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday in Makurdi, Benue State. Before her passing, she had been receiving medical care at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital.
Maria Ochefu was married to Colonel Anthony Ochefu, a former military governor of Enugu State. Years ago, in an interview, she recalled how Mammy Market started and grew into a well-known business space within military barracks nationwide. She also mentioned that two former Heads of State, General Yakubu Gowon and Muhammadu Buhari, were among her early customers.
She would have celebrated her 87th birthday in April.
