Panic has spread across the Wadata area of Makurdi, Benue State, following a violent confrontation between rival groups that resulted in the deaths of four individuals, with several others sustaining injuries.
According to Afripost, The clash, which occurred on Sunday morning, was reportedly fueled by a territorial dispute between two opposing factions.
Eyewitnesses described the terrifying scene as gunfire erupted, leaving bodies in different locations across the community.
According to local sources, two victims lost their lives near the riverside, another was attacked near the Wadata police barracks, and a fourth individual was fatally wounded at the local rice mill.
A resident, who requested anonymity, recalled the moment the violence broke out:
“I had just stepped out to borrow a pressing iron around 11 a.m. when I suddenly heard gunshots. Later, I learned that two people had been killed.”
The situation escalated further in the evening when armed individuals allegedly stormed a gathering, targeting a man identified as Emeka, before proceeding to another location, where another life was lost.
In fear of further violence, many residents have abandoned their homes, seeking safety elsewhere.
“The entire area is empty now. We need immediate intervention to restore peace before more people get hurt,” one concerned resident urged.
Despite the rising tension, authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident, as calls and messages seeking comments from security officials have gone unanswered.
