Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has directed all civil and public servants in the state to wear traditional attire featuring Aso Oke fabric every Thursday, alongside the already established tradition of wearing native attire on Fridays.
According to Peoples Gazette, the announcement, made through a circular from the Office of the Head of Service to heads of ministries and agencies on January 27, 2025, highlights the new initiative’s cultural and economic goals.
The circular states, “Every Thursday and Friday, our workforce will represent our culture and contribute to economic growth.”
The policy is designed to do more than just promote a dress code; it seeks to affirm the state’s cultural identity while boosting local economies..
The initiative will help preserve Yoruba traditions, empower local artisans, and strengthen the informal sector, while also showcasing the state’s rich cultural heritage.
Governor Makinde also noted that the new directive would create more opportunities for local weavers, dyers, and tailors, helping to sustain their businesses, reduce unemployment, and increase their income.
He anticipates that the dress code will stimulate demand for Aso Oke fabrics, support tourism, and foster inclusive growth in Oyo State.
