LG Autonomy: Ondo PDP Calls for Attorney General’s Resignation

By Our Correspondent

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of Ondo State has formally called for the resignation of Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, who serves as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

This call comes amidst allegations that Ajulo violated his oath of office by endorsing the appointment of Transition Committees for 18 Local Governments and 33 Local Council Development Areas without sufficient legal basis.

The controversy stems from Ajulo’s recent press statement where he purported that such appointments fall under the Governor’s constitutional rights, without citing specific legal provisions.

This assertion has drawn sharp criticism from the PDP, which argues that it contradicts a recent Supreme Court ruling emphasizing the sanctity of democratically elected local governments.

In a landmark judgment delivered on July 11th, 2024, the Supreme Court of Nigeria underscored the importance of democratically elected local councils, stating that state governments jeopardize constitutional principles by appointing committees instead of respecting elected officials.

Kennedy Ikantu Peretei, the State Publicity Secretary of PDP, Ondo State, condemned Ajulo’s stance as an attempt to legitimize what the Supreme Court has deemed unlawful.

He questioned the Attorney General’s legal basis for his support of the Governor’s actions, warning that such actions could have legal consequences for those involved.

The PDP advised individuals appointed to these committees to exercise caution, emphasizing that any expenditures made in these capacities could potentially be subject to legal scrutiny and recovery.

Given the perceived failure of Ajulo to uphold legal standards in his advisory role to the Governor, the PDP has unequivocally demanded his resignation as Attorney General of Ondo State.
