President Bola Tinubu has greenlit N500 million for the inauguration and operation of the 37-member Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage, slashing the initially proposed N1 billion budget.
The decision was conveyed in a letter from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The document, shared on social media by @PIDOMNIGERIA (99% OPPRESSED), revealed that the committee’s inauguration held on January 26, 2024.
The new minimum wage is anticipated to be finalized by April 1, 2024, in accordance with the law.
In a handwritten note, President Tinubu directed the committee to commence with the approved budget of N500 million, prompting reactions from the public.
Former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani criticized the committee, stating, “The Minimum Wage Committee just allocated the maximum wage for themselves.”
Vice President Kashim Shettima officially inaugurated the committee on January 30, 2024.
However, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, expressed concerns about the composition of the committee, claiming that many governors were not adhering to the N30,000 minimum wage in their states.
Ajaero remarked, “The governors who are in full compliance with the minimum wage are not adequately represented,” raising questions about the choice of committee members.
Reactions are pouring in as citizens are questioning the necessity of such a significant budget for the committee’s inauguration amidst the economy hardship the nation is grappling with.

“If this revelation is correct, then, Nigeria is finished. No hope for common men on the street. Nigeria is in a wrong hand. We are a blessed country, but since return of Democracy, our problem has been a leadership issue. From past to present leaders, they have no concern for the masses they govern. Everyone is just coming to corridors of power to enrich themselves and leave. It is finished!”.
