Nigerians pay close attention to what is happening at the Federal Capital Territory’s Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal. Senior Nigerian advocate Dr. Livy Uzoukwu has responded to a request from the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the probable exclusion of Peter Obi of the Labour Party from a future election rerun.
On August 1, Tinubu’s legal team delivered their Final Written Address to the five-person Tribunal Justices panel. They pushed for the Labour Party and Peter Obi to be excluded from any prospective election rerun. The President’s Lead Counsel, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), contended that, in the event of a rerun, only the top two finishers should compete.
Peter Obi’s principal attorney, Dr. Livy Uzoukwu, said that the APC’s appeal to the tribunal centers on a Constitutional issue outside of the courtroom. He stressed that the Justices of the Appeal Court should interpret this matter. He added that in order to secure a win for the Labour Party, his team had used every resource at their disposal.
Dr. Uzoukwu noted that the issue is one that has been thoroughly examined from a constitutional standpoint. He emphasized that the final decision must be made by the court. He added that although the court’s decision is final, the substance of their argument is what really important, and that their arguments in support of their claim were strong and convincing.
