Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, was on Monday sentenced to death by hanging.
The decision was made by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.
Nwachukwu was convicted of culpable homicide after being found responsible for his wife’s death on April 8, 2022.
The court ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven its case.
The charge against Nwachukwu included a 23-count indictment, which covered various offenses such as culpable homicide, child cruelty, spousal battery, and criminal intimidation.
The case, which began in June 2022, involved 17 witnesses, including two of the couple’s children, who testified against Nwachukwu.
The defense presented Nwachukwu’s testimony along with four other witnesses. Throughout the trial, 25 documents were submitted as evidence.
Before sentencing, Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, appealed for a lenient sentence, while the prosecution, represented by Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to uphold the law.
Along with the death sentence, Nwachukwu received additional sentences for other charges: two years for multiple counts, six months for one count, and three years for another.
He was also fined a total of N700,000 for certain charges.
