The Lagos State Taskforce has apprehended 54 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal ticketing and extortion targeting trucks and commercial vehicles entering Lagos State.
The arrests were made in various locations, including Isolo, Mushin, Apapa, Mile 2, and along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
According to reports, the suspects, wielding sticks, would stop trucks carrying goods and demand unauthorized fines. Those who refused to pay faced either delays due to traffic jams caused by their obstruction or damage to their vehicles, such as smashed side mirrors.
CSP Adetayo Akerele, Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, stated that these enforcement actions are part of the agency’s commitment to ending such unlawful practices.
“This illegal ticketing system has been operating for too long. We are dedicated to arresting and prosecuting anyone who imposes unjust fines on trucks and commercial vehicles. These practices are not only illegal but harmful to the state’s economy,” Akerele remarked.
He emphasized that the ongoing operation is part of a broader effort by the Taskforce to restore order in Lagos, ensuring businesses can operate without the threat of extortion.
“It is our statutory duty to arrest and prosecute those involved in the illegal issuance of fines and tickets. We will ensure that anyone engaged in these illicit activities faces legal consequences,” Akerele added.
He also encouraged Lagosians, especially business owners, to report any suspicious activities to the agency for immediate action, assuring that the suspects will be promptly charged in court.
