Lagos Police Commissioner Removed Amid Escalating Speakership Crisis

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has appointed Olohundare Moshood Jimoh as the new Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, replacing Ishola Olanrewaju Olawale.

According to Politics Nigeria, This move, announced on Monday, comes amidst rising tensions in the Lagos State House of Assembly. CP Jimoh, who previously served as the Commissioner of Police at the Ports Authority, Eastern Ports, takes over at a time when security forces, including heavily armed operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police, stormed the Lagos Assembly complex.

Reports indicate that security personnel sealed off the offices of key officials, including the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Clerk of the House. In response, the Lagos Assembly passed a vote of confidence in Speaker Mojisola Meranda, and then suspended the plenary indefinitely.

The unrest follows the recent impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was removed from office while abroad. Obasa has since challenged the impeachment in court, arguing that the process was unlawful.

The change in police leadership is believed to be linked to the ongoing political crisis, as the state government seeks to restore stability.

In a statement, the PSC highlighted CP Jimoh’s extensive experience, noting his previous roles as the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner at the Airport Police, Deputy Commissioner of Finance and Administration, and Deputy Commissioner of General Investigation. A native of Kwara State, Jimoh is expected to bring significant expertise to his new position.
