Mr. Oluwagbenga Abiola, the Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government in Lagos State, has withdrawn from the race for the council’s top seat in the upcoming July 12, 2025, local government election.
Abiola decided to step aside for Abdulganiyu Obasa, the son of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
Abiola, who has held several positions in Agege with the backing of Speaker Obasa and the ruling party, said his decision was not influenced by any form of pressure.
He said it was a personal choice rooted in loyalty to the Speaker and the political direction of the party.
He recalled his journey in public service, which began in 2015 when he was appointed Special Assistant on Media, followed by other key positions including Sole Administrator, Secretary to the Local Government, and finally Vice Chairman.
While confirming he had hoped to run for the chairmanship, Abiola said the decision of party leaders and stakeholders to support Abdulganiyu Obasa was something he had to respect.
He added that he trusted the Speaker’s leadership and would remain loyal to the party’s goals.
Abiola said there will still be opportunities for him to serve in the future and assured that members of his political support group, Obasa Youth Alliance, would also back the party’s decision.
