Joe Igbokwe, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has faced backlash following his comments opposing the suggestion of Seyi Tinubu as a potential governor of Lagos State.
According to Afripost, in a Facebook post, Igbokwe dismissed the idea, stating that governance in Lagos is not “a job for the boys” and accusing proponents of trying to undermine President Bola Tinubu.
One notable response to Igbokwe’s remarks came from Comrade Isaac Balami, a prominent APC figure and former Deputy Campaign Manager for Obi/Datti in the 2023 elections. Balami, in a statement, expressed his strong support for Seyi Tinubu’s possible governorship bid, promising to rally his supporters to back the younger Tinubu if he decides to contest.
“If Seyi Tinubu chooses to run for Lagos governor, I will fully mobilize my network of youth supporters to support him. As someone who has experienced age-based discrimination due to my ambition, I believe it’s time to challenge the dominance of older politicians and create space for younger leaders,” Balami stated.
While acknowledging his respect for Igbokwe’s contributions to politics, Balami criticized his position as outdated and contrary to the growing global trend of empowering younger leaders in governance.
He pointed out that many notable leaders rose to power at a young age, such as Yakubu Gowon, who became Nigeria’s Head of State at 32, and Emmanuel Macron, who became France’s President at 39. Balami emphasized that Seyi Tinubu, who will be 42 in 2027, is more than qualified to lead Lagos effectively.
“Denying a qualified candidate the opportunity to run for office based on age or personal bias undermines democratic principles. Leadership should be about competence and vision, not age or background,” Balami argued.
He further expressed disappointment in Igbokwe, noting that as someone who benefitted from early political opportunities, his stance against youth leadership appears contradictory. Balami suggested that instead of focusing on age, discussions should center on merit and the ability to deliver results.
Highlighting Seyi Tinubu’s accomplishments, Balami praised his leadership in the private sector and his philanthropic efforts through his foundation, which has empowered many young people. He asserted that Seyi Tinubu’s achievements make him a strong candidate to continue Lagos State’s progress.
“The older generation has done its part, but it’s time for the youths to step up and bring fresh ideas to governance. Seyi Tinubu represents the innovation and energy that Lagos needs to thrive in the years ahead,” Balami concluded.
The debate over youth involvement in leadership continues, with many viewing it as a critical factor in shaping Lagos and Nigeria’s future.
