The Lagos State Government has marked shanties and illegally constructed buildings in Itu-Mara, Mainland Local Government Area, for demolition as part of its urban renewal efforts.
According to NAN, Gbolahan Oki, General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), confirmed this in a statement issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Adu Ademuyiwa, on Wednesday.
According to Oki, the move is aimed at improving the area’s overall aesthetics and ensuring sustainable development. He noted that many of the structures were not only illegal but also posed significant safety risks.
“The present administration will leave no stone unturned in safeguarding the lives and property of Lagos residents,” Oki stated.
He also alleged that some of the shanties served as hideouts for criminals, posing a security threat to the community. Additionally, he pointed out that several of the buildings were in a state of disrepair and at risk of collapse.
Oki assured that LASBCA remains committed to strict enforcement of Lagos State Building Codes and Regulations. He further stated that affected residents had been formally notified of the planned demolition and urged them to comply with the order.
He emphasized that all legal procedures, including service of eviction and quit notices, had been followed, warning occupants to vacate within the stipulated time or face legal action.
