Lagos Assembly Staff Worried as Acting Clerk Falls Ill After DSS Visit

Tension spread on Wednesday through the Lagos State House of Assembly when Acting Clerk Ottun Babatunde was rushed to the hospital shortly after returning from an invitation by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Babatunde, who had recently been removed from his position, reportedly complained of dizziness following a questioning session at the DSS office.

His visit to the DSS was linked to a petition filed by former Clerk Olalekan Onafeko, who accused Babatunde of inciting Assembly staff against him.

The ongoing dispute follows a National Industrial Court ruling that allegedly nullified Babatunde’s appointment as acting Clerk.

He had assumed the role under former Speaker Mojisola Meranda, who is now the Deputy Speaker.

Witnesses at the Assembly described the moment Babatunde fell ill as shocking.

He had attended the DSS meeting alongside a senior staff member and was released with instructions to return the next day.

However, after honouring the invitation, he suddenly felt unwell and was taken to a hospital.

Staff members were deeply concerned about his health, especially as the leadership crisis continues to disrupt activities in the Assembly.

For weeks, legislative operations have been slow due to the ongoing power struggle.

Onafeko, who was previously removed from office, allegedly ordered banks to halt the release of Assembly funds, further complicating administrative functions.

Staff members expressed frustration over the situation, stating that the Assembly is struggling to function normally.

After a few hours in the hospital, Babatunde was discharged and taken home.
