Labourer Kills Employer Over Kola Nut Theft in Ondo

A tragic incident unfolded in Láòsò, near Laje Camp in Ondo West Local Government Area, where a labourer allegedly killed his employer, 60-year-old Mrs. Adelugba, after being caught stealing kola nuts from her farm.

Mrs. Adelugba, a respected farmer with three farms in the area, had recently completed her house in Miracle Land, FFF, Ondo. She employed the labourer to help with work on her farm, where the theft took place.

Sources reveal that last week, the labourer was caught stealing kola nuts. Fearing the village’s tradition of banishing anyone caught stealing, he pleaded for forgiveness and promised to repay the stolen goods or have the cost deducted from his wages. Mrs. Adelugba agreed to the arrangement.

However, on Saturday, the labourer ambushed Mrs. Adelugba while she was on her way to the farm, attacking her with a machete and killing her. He then covered her body with leaves and palm fronds before fleeing the scene.

The suspect reportedly confessed to the crime on Sunday, claiming that the deceased had pressured him into admitting his theft. He led villagers to the scene, where her body was recovered and taken to the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) mortuary.

The police confirmed that the labourer was initially detained at the Fagun Police Division before being transferred to the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Akure for further investigation. The deceased’s family is expected to visit the police headquarters on Wednesday to obtain clearance for her burial.

The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation is ongoing.
