The Labour Party (LP) has set up a three-member committee to address disagreements between the party and its lawmakers in the National Assembly.
The committee was inaugurated on Monday at the party’s headquarters in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen internal unity.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the party’s national publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, announced that Ben Etanabene would lead the committee, with Mathew Nworgu and Chinedu Obika as members.
Their task is to meet with LP senators and representatives to identify and resolve conflicts affecting party cohesion.
LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, urged the committee to ensure that all 40 Labour Party lawmakers work in harmony with the party leadership.
He described them as key representatives of the party and called for a united front. He also expressed confidence that the committee would achieve results within two weeks.
This intervention follows recent defections of some LP lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Four members of the House of Representatives—Chinedu Okere (Owerri Municipal/Owerri North/Owerri West), Mathew Donatus (Kaura), Akiba Bassey (Calabar Municipal/Odukpani), and Esosa Iyawe (Oredo)—recently left the party, citing internal crises as their reason for switching sides.
Committee chairman, Ben Etanabene, assured the party leadership that they would take the assignment seriously and work towards restoring unity.
The Labour Party hopes that this initiative will prevent further defections and keep the party strong ahead of future political battles.
