Senator Nenadi Usman, the Chair of the Labour Party (LP) Caretaker Committee, announced on Tuesday that the committee plans to appeal the Federal High Court’s decision in Abuja that affirmed Julius Abure as the party’s chairman.
In a statement she personally signed and shared with AFRIPOST.NG, Usman revealed that she had met with key party figures, including the 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who serves as Secretary of the LP Caretaker Committee, to discuss the ruling.
The former finance minister acknowledged that the judgment regarding the party’s Nnewi Convention predates the establishment of the Caretaker Committee, but the party leadership has decided to contest this ruling.
Usman urged party members to remain calm and peaceful while reconciliation efforts are underway.
“This evening, I met with His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, His Excellency Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha (Secretary, LP Caretaker Committee). We discussed the judgment delivered today.
“The case actually predates the formation of the Caretaker Committee. However, after receiving a briefing, the Caretaker Committee chose to join the case. Therefore, we have resolved to appeal the judgment.
“I urge all party members to stay calm and uphold peace as we work towards reconciliation,” she stated.
