Former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has cautioned the Federal Government against interfering in Kano State’s internal matters.
His remarks were in reaction to a controversial “terror alert” issued by the Kano State Police Command ahead of the Maulud celebration in honour of Sheikh Ibrahim Inyass, the spiritual leader of the Tijjaniyya Sufi Order.
In a post on his official X handle, Kwankwaso congratulated the Tijjaniyya Sufi Order for successfully holding the event at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano. He also commended Emir Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for their efforts in organising the event.
However, Kwankwaso criticised the timing and content of the police alert, describing it as reckless and unprofessional. He argued that the alert endangered the lives of attendees, including international guests, and caused unnecessary panic among Kano residents.
“The alert jeopardized the event and created widespread panic,” Kwankwaso stated, accusing the police of colluding with the Federal Government in frequent intrusions into Kano’s affairs.
He warned that issuing false alerts could erode public confidence in security agencies, making people less likely to trust genuine warnings in the future. He also highlighted the negative global impression the incident had created for both the police and Nigeria.
Kwankwaso called on the police to uphold professionalism and avoid being perceived as tools for political manipulation in Kano or any other state. He further urged the Federal Government to respect Kano State’s autonomy and refrain from encroaching on its jurisdiction.
“I urge the Federal Government once again to stay out of issues that are clearly within the purview of Kano State,” Kwankwaso concluded.
