The Kogi State Government has stopped trade unions from collecting daily revenue in all 21 local government areas.
Governor Usman Ododo, represented by the Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, announced the ban on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting. He explained that the government wants to ensure proper revenue management and support economic development.
In 2017, the state introduced the Infrastructure Maintenance Levy (IML) for commercial vehicles to help maintain roads and infrastructure. However, some union leaders have been accused of diverting funds for personal gain instead of remitting them properly.
To address the issue, the government has now taken full control of revenue collection. Security agencies have been directed to enforce the ban, and any disruptions will not be tolerated.
The State Security Adviser, Commodore Jerry Omodara (retd.), confirmed that the new rule would be strictly implemented. He also reminded residents that commercial tricycles and motorcycles are still banned from highways to reduce accidents.
