Kano State’s government has closed the well-known Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market in the Garun Mallam Local Government Area after it became a hub for illegal and immoral activities.
Authorities decided to take action after the market was linked to prostitution, adultery, and other unlawful behaviours involving both youths and married individuals.
The local council acted swiftly, giving those operating in the market a week to vacate the area.
The Council’s Chairman, Aminu Kadawa, confirmed the closure, stating that the market had deviated from its original purpose and had become a breeding ground for crime.
He assured the public that a reopening date would be announced once the situation was addressed.
Aisha Saji, the state’s Commissioner of Tourism and Management, expressed her support for the closure, recalling a past raid at the market during her tenure as Commissioner for Women Affairs.
During that operation, 43 people, including minors, were arrested for involvement in prostitution and illegal alcohol sales. Shockingly, many of the arrested individuals were HIV-positive.
Saji also highlighted a past recommendation for demolishing the market and repurposing the land for a vocational training center to provide youth with opportunities for employment and skill development.
