Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has reinstated two parcels of land to the family of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, reversing their revocation by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai two years ago.
The lands, located at No. 9 Abakpa GRA and No. 1 Degel Road, Ungwan Rimi GRA, were seized in 2022, with the then-state government citing violations of the Right of Occupancy terms.
The Abacha family, through their lawyer, Reuben Atabo (SAN), had challenged the revocation in court, claiming it brought embarrassment to the family.
In letters dated December 10, 2024, Governor Sani directed the reinstatement of the land titles, contingent upon payment of all outstanding fees and charges. The letters were addressed to Mohammed Sani Abacha through the law firm of R.O. Atabo, SAN & Company.
The first letter regarding the property at No. 9 Abakpa GRA stated:
“I am directed to refer to the above-mentioned Right of Occupancy and to inform you that His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State, has, in the powers conferred on him under the Land Use Act 1978, reinstated the aforementioned title… subject to the strict condition of settling all outstanding fees and charges.”
The second letter, concerning the property at Degel Road, Ungwan Rimi GRA, similarly confirmed the reinstatement:
“I am directed to inform you that His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State, has, in the exercise of powers conferred on him under the Land Use Act 1978, reinstated your rights and interest over the piece of land… subject to the strict condition of settling all outstanding fees and charges.”
Governor Sani’s decision follows pleas from the Abacha family, marking a shift from the actions taken by the El-Rufai administration.
