Kaduna Electric has clarified that it has disengaged 450 employees, refuting reports from the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) claiming that over 900 workers were affected.
According to Afripost, the announcement comes amid a statewide blackout in Kaduna, which has now lasted for two days, as electricity workers went on strike to protest the layoffs.
Comrade Sheyin Nuhu Wakili, Chairman of the NUEE in Kaduna State, spoke to reporters on Tuesday, stressing that no worker should be dismissed without receiving their full entitlements. He also claimed that during a meeting with the Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday, Kaduna Electric had initially agreed to withdraw the disengagement letters but later failed to honor the commitment.
Comrade Baffa Safiyanu Isyaku, President of the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) Kaduna Branch, voiced support for the strike, stating that the power restoration process has been hindered due to the removal of key personnel. He appealed for public understanding, highlighting the impact of the layoffs on the workers and their families.
In response, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, Head of Corporate Communication at Kaduna Electric, explained that the company is undergoing significant restructuring to enhance its long-term sustainability. He reiterated the company’s commitment to transparency and fairness and acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the ongoing power outage.
