The Supreme Court of Nigeria has dismissed reports suggesting that Justice Emmanuel Agim attended the University of Calabar’s convocation ceremony alongside Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
A statement from the Supreme Court on Monday clarified that Justice Agim was present at the event as an honouree and not as part of any ministerial entourage.
According to the court’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Festus Akande, Justice Agim attended the convocation because he was selected by the University’s Governing Council to receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Law, also known as Doctor Honoris Causa.
This recognition was given to him in appreciation of his contributions to the legal profession and his dedication to promoting justice and fairness.
The statement also addressed allegations that Agim accompanied Wike to the event, describing the claim as untrue.
It clarified that Justice Agim attended the ceremony independently and without any connection to any government official or ministry.
The Supreme Court expressed concern over the spread of such false reports, warning that misinformation could undermine the judiciary’s independence.
The court also mentioned that Justice Agim had been initially scheduled to attend the burial of Hon. Justice Stanley Alagoa in Bayelsa State but had received approval to attend the convocation instead.
In its conclusion, the Supreme Court urged both the media and the public to verify facts carefully before sharing information to avoid spreading misleading narratives.
