JUST IN: One dead, 30 trapped in mining site

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed the deaths of 31 individuals, including a miner and site manager Alhaji Ibrahim Ishaku, following a mining pit collapse in Galkogo, Shiroro local government area. The collapse occurred on Monday.

NSEMA reported that six people were rescued with serious injuries. According to a statement by Hussaini Ibrahim, NSEMA’s Public Relations Officer, the collapse was caused by rainfall, which weakened the soil. This statement was released to the press in Minna.

The PRO disclosed that the mine site belongs to a company named “African Minerals and Logistics Limited.”

“At the time of filing this report, it was gathered that one person has been confirmed dead, six people were rescued with severe injuries, while about 30, which includes the site manager, Alh. Ibrahim Ishaku were still trapped as of yesterday.

“The rescuers had to run for their lives as the mine kept falling inside Galkogo village of Shiroro LGA yesterday, June 3, 2024.”

Additionally, there is very little information on the incident—including the rescue operations—due to the unsatisfactory climate that resulted from banditry, according to NSEMA.

The organisation also stated that rescue operations had involved the use of excavators.
