For the first time in 2025, Nigeria’s national power grid has experienced a major collapse, leading to a nationwide blackout. This incident occurred barely 11 days into the new year.
According to PUNCH, the latest collapse brings the total number of grid failures to 13 within the past 13 months, underscoring persistent challenges in the country’s power sector.
Reports reveal that electricity generation plummeted from 2,111.01 megawatts at 2:00 p.m. to just 390.20 MW by 3:00 p.m., leaving many parts of the country in darkness.
Confirming the development, The Energy Podcast shared updates on social media: “National grid suffers major collapse… First in 2025.” Another post indicated, “Restoration has begun… Currently generating 302MW as of 2:40 p.m.”
Efforts to restore power across affected areas are ongoing, with further details expected soon.
