The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has removed 7,746 deceased individuals from the national voter register. This action was taken across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in December 2022.
According to Politics Nigeria, Victoria Etta-Messi, the Director of Voter Education and Publicity for INEC, explained that the commission routinely cleans the national voter register before each election to ensure that only eligible voters remain. “As of December 2022, 7,746 deceased persons were deleted from the National Register of Voters across the country,” Etta-Messi stated.
Etta-Messi also highlighted that the 2023 post-election review revealed 12,298,944 new voter registrations, which resulted from improvements to the registration process by the commission.
She pointed out that a key challenge for INEC remains the difficulty of removing deceased persons from the register due to gaps in official death records. “Problems with official death records continue to complicate the process of removing deceased registrants,” she added.
