Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Retd), has called on northern elites to prioritize national unity over regional ambitions, cautioning against actions that could destabilize the country.
Speaking at the Yakubu Gowon Centre in Abuja during a visit by the League of Northern Democrats (LND) delegation led by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, Gowon emphasized the importance of collaboration among Nigeria’s diverse regions. He warned that divisive politics could jeopardize the nation’s stability and progress.
His remarks come amidst rising calls for power to return to the North, despite President Bola Tinubu, a southerner, being in office for just over a year. Gowon advised northern leaders to focus on fostering unity and national interest rather than pursuing regional dominance.
Reflecting on his tenure as Head of State, he recounted the difficulties of maintaining unity during the Nigerian Civil War and stressed the importance of peace and development across all regions. Gowon also expressed concern over ongoing issues in northern Nigeria, including insecurity, poverty, and drug abuse.
He commended the efforts of the LND in addressing these challenges and encouraged similar groups to promote national progress. “Whatever you do, prioritize the collective good of Nigeria,” Gowon urged. “Collaboration among states is vital, but it should never come at the cost of national unity. Your efforts inspire hope for Nigeria’s future, and I am here to support you.”
Senator Shekarau hailed Gowon as a symbol of resilience and unity, recognizing his leadership during some of Nigeria’s most challenging periods.
Gowon’s stance aligns with recent comments by former presidential aide Doyin Okupe, who suggested that the presidency should remain in the South for another term before returning to the North.
Gowon’s remarks underscore the importance of balancing leadership demands with the need for unity and equitable development, emphasizing a vision of shared progress for all Nigerians.
