JUST IN: FRSC to Prosecute Passenger for Assaulting Officers in Lagos

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced that it will prosecute a passenger who assaulted its officers during a routine traffic stop in Lagos State.

In a statement, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Public Education Officer, explained that the incident took place on November 7, 2024, along the Oko-Ado Lekki-Epe Expressway, within the Lekki Unit Command area. The FRSC patrol team flagged down a Toyota Corolla, registered EPE690HH, for a seatbelt violation at approximately 3:54 PM.

Upon checking the vehicle’s documents, officers discovered that the registration had expired in December 2022, prompting the decision to impound the vehicle. While the driver complied, a female passenger became confrontational, verbally abusing the officers and threatening to take legal action against them for carrying out their duties.

The passenger’s behavior escalated as she tried to gain sympathy from other road users by causing a scene. When this failed, she physically assaulted the officers, an act captured in a video. Despite the officers’ attempts to calm her down, the assault continued even after the vehicle was impounded.

The Unit Commander subsequently contacted the Divisional Police Officer at Ajah Police Station, who dispatched officers to arrest both the passenger and the driver for further investigation.

The Corps Marshal commended the officers for their professionalism and restraint during the altercation and confirmed that legal action will be taken against the passenger involved in the assault.
