A fierce fire engulfed a Christ Apostolic Church in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday night, trapping several worshippers inside the building.

The fire reportedly started around 9:30 p.m. at Wisdom Estate, Road 1G, Olohunda Road, in the Lagelu Local Government Area, sources told PUNCH Online on Saturday morning.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the church was conducting its Friday vigil when the fire erupted. One onlooker shared, “It happened around 9:30 p.m. Some worshippers had already fallen asleep, resting before the vigil started when the fire broke out.”

Another source described a distressing scene, mentioning an elderly woman who was unable to escape the fire due to her frailty.

A church member, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that people were still inside the church during the blaze but did not provide further details.

As of the latest reports, the cause of the fire remains unknown.

Akinyemi Akinyinka, the General Manager of Oyo State Fire Services, confirmed the incident and stated that fire service personnel were dispatched after receiving information from Kunle Junaid. He assured the public that further updates would be provided as the investigation continues.
