According to AFP, FC Porto announced the dismissal of Vitor Bruno on Monday, making him the third coach to be sacked by one of Portugal’s top three clubs this season.
The 42-year-old manager took over from the new AC Milan boss, Sergio Conceição, during the close season but was let go after Porto experienced back-to-back league defeats this month, causing them to lose ground in the title race.
The club confirmed that José Tavares, Porto’s academy director, will step in as interim coach.
Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Gil Vicente marked Porto’s third consecutive defeat across all competitions. They had previously suffered a setback against Sporting Lisbon in the semi-finals of the League Cup on January 7.
As a result, Porto has slipped to third place in the league table, now four points behind leaders Sporting, while Benfica climbed into second place over the weekend.
Benfica had previously parted ways with German coach Roger Schmidt at the end of August, and Sporting sacked João Pereira, the successor to Ruben Amorim, just over a month after Amorim left for Manchester United.
