The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has taken swift action following the accidental shooting of 27-year-old Tomiwa Oni Odofa at a police checkpoint in Itele, Ota, Ogun State, on July 24, 2024.

The incident happened when police officers attempted to stop a Lexus vehicle for a routine check.

However, as the driver reportedly tried to escape, the officers opened fire, and a stray bullet struck Tomiwa, who was a passenger in the car.

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the Ogun State Police Command immediately ensured Tomiwa received urgent medical care and monitored her condition until she was discharged.

He also confirmed that the officers involved had been identified and were undergoing disciplinary procedures to address their actions.

To further demonstrate the police force’s commitment to justice, the IGP directed the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, to visit Tomiwa’s family in Ota to assess her recovery and provide support.

Additionally, he ordered that she undergo psychological evaluation and therapy as part of her rehabilitation. The police reassured the public of their dedication to professionalism, vowing to investigate and address cases of misconduct.
