Omoyele Sowore, a prominent activist and former presidential candidate, has recently concluded an engagement with a team from the Nigeria Police Force at the Force Intelligence Department (FID) in Abuja. The meeting, referred to by the police as an “interview,” has sparked concerns over the nature of the allegations against him.
Sowore stated in a post on his verified Meta (Facebook) Account on Monday that the police relied heavily on previously circulated information largely sourced from the internet. When he inquired about the specifics of the alleged crime, the police could only provide a vague reference to a location along the airport road in Lagos.
Declining to provide a written statement, Sowore emphasized that, without a clearly defined crime, the process was unwarranted. Following a break in the proceedings, the police informed him that they were awaiting further instructions from their superiors, leading Sowore to believe there were plans to detain him and transport him to Lagos for what he described as a “kangaroo trial.”
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his legal situation, Sowore expressed his readiness to face any potential consequences. He reiterated that the matter at hand relates to his public assertion that the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who is nearing retirement, was unlawfully extended. Sowore remains steadfast in his belief that the fight for justice will continue, stating, “We are entering a promising year, and our fight for justice will persist.”
He concluded his statement with the hashtag #RevolutionNow, reflecting his commitment to advocating for change in Nigeria.
