Gunmen involved in the attack that killed eight leaders in Umucheke community, Onuimo Council Area, Imo State, were reportedly six in number.
A local community leader, who spoke anonymously for security reasons, revealed during a joint assessment by the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Monday that the attackers arrived on three motorcycles. The leader noted that while the community saw the men approaching, their true intentions were not apparent until gunshots were fired and cries for help were heard.
“We saw them, but we did not recognize them as gunmen. It was only when the shooting started and people began running for safety that we realized the danger,” the leader said. “Those killed included our cabinet chiefs and youth leaders. We are deeply mournful and feel the loss acutely. The manner of their deaths shows a disregard for their value to our community.”
On Monday, officials from the Imo State Police Command and the NSCDC visited Umucheke Community to assess the aftermath of the attack that occurred on Saturday.
Henry Okoye, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the visit and reported that the attackers are suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The authorities have pledged to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
According to the statement, “On August 4, 2024, Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma, Sole Administrator of Onuimo LGA Dr. Emeka Obi, Major AI Maikarifi of the 34 Artillery Brigade, Commandant NSCDC Comdt. Matthew Ovye, and other security officials visited Umucheke for an on-the-spot assessment. The attack, which resulted in the deaths of eight members of the Eze Umucheke Cabinet, was carried out by individuals suspected to be from IPOB/ESN.
“CP Aboki Danjuma extended his condolences to the families and the community and assured them that security forces are working together to capture the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
