Tension soared in Benue State late on Friday as suspected herdsmen attacked the Otobi Dam in Otukpo Local Government Area, killing a security guard stationed there.
The killing marks yet another violent incident in Otukpo, an area that has seen a rise in attacks over recent weeks.
Angbo Kennedy, a member of the Benue State House of Assembly representing Otukpo/Akpa Constituency, confirmed the incident, expressing frustration over the ongoing insecurity in the region.
“This is getting out of control. A guard has just been killed at Otobi Dam this evening,” Kennedy stated. “We must look out for one another; this could escalate to self-defence.”
At the time of this report, authorities had not identified the victim, and no arrests had been made.
The tragic killing follows a series of violent incidents in nearby communities like Okpomaju, Okete, and Asa, where similar attacks have caused loss of life and forced many to flee.
Just a day earlier, gunmen attacked a Benue Links bus, killing two people and abducting 13 passengers, further heightening the sense of fear and insecurity in the area. Local residents are calling on the state government and security forces to increase their presence in vulnerable locations, particularly near the Otobi Dam.
