Gunmen Set Police Station, Houses Ablaze In Taraba

Gunmen have attacked Chunku Community in Wukari Local Government Area (LGA) of Taraba State, burning a police station and some houses.

According to the Spokesman of the State Police Command, DSP David Misal, who spoke to Channels television, the fracas was a reprisal from the Tivs on the Jukuns.

“The fracas all started when a Tiv man was beaten by the Jukuns, a situation that angered the Tiv’s which led to a reprisal by the Tiv’s burning down houses, including the police outpost.

“In the course of the attack, some irate youths took to the streets attacking vehicles and passers-by,” Misal added.

Also, Chairman of Wukari Local Government, Daniel Grace, expressed dismay with the attacks, adding that despite efforts put in place by the state government, some individuals are still bent on frustrating the peace agreement signed by both parties.

He said that a luxury bus conveying passengers was attacked by the armed men and the driver was wounded in the process.

According to Mr Grace, Chonku village is now deserted with few living in great fear for the unknown.
