A violent attack marred the Onwa Asaa festival in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday, as masked gunmen opened fire on the community, leading to multiple deaths.
The attackers, reportedly in a black Lexus SUV, stormed a local eatery and began shooting indiscriminately, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 10 lives.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as festival-goers scrambled for safety, with many left in shock.
“It was terrifying. The gunmen stormed the place and started firing everywhere. People were running, screaming—it was complete chaos,” one witness said.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, but residents are demanding swift action from authorities to restore security and prevent further bloodshed.
“We appeal to the government to intervene urgently. We cannot live in constant fear. What was meant to be a time of celebration has been turned into a tragedy,” a local resident lamented.
When Vanguard visited the scene, security forces, including the police, had been deployed in large numbers to restore order. Police officials confirmed that an investigation into the attack has been launched.
