The Lakurawa terrorist group has been launching repeated attacks on communities in Kebbi State, near the Nigeria-Niger border, forcing Governor Nasir Idris to call for immediate military intervention.
Concerned about the increasing violence, he has appealed to the Nigerian Defence Headquarters to set up a Military Operational Base (MOB) at the border to tackle the growing security threat.
Speaking at his residence in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday night, the governor addressed residents of Gesse II Housing after returning from the affected villages.
He revealed that he had contacted the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to push for the deployment of more troops and advanced security measures.
Governor Idris described how the bandits have been attacking villages in Arewa Local Government, killing residents, destroying homes, and looting properties before escaping into Sokoto State and Niger Republic.
While he acknowledged the efforts of the joint security task force, he pointed out that the criminals’ evolving hit-and-run tactics require stronger countermeasures.
To support ongoing operations, the governor announced that four additional Hilux vehicles have been provided to the task force.
He assured the public that his administration remains fully committed to protecting lives and properties.
As part of relief efforts, an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp has been set up for those affected by the violence in Birnin Debe, Dan Marke, and Tambo villages. Meanwhile, residents of Gesse II, led by Alhaji Muhammadu Dan’atto Mayanan Gwandu, visited the governor to express their appreciation for the completion of street lighting and road projects in their area.
