Governor Bala Mohammed Responds to Presidency, Defends His Criticism

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has dismissed allegations from the presidency that he threatened President Bola Tinubu, describing his remarks as constructive criticism aimed at addressing policies that could harm Nigerians.

According to Politcs Nigeria, the clarification follows a statement from the presidency urging the governor to withdraw his comments, which were allegedly interpreted as a threat in the context of the controversial Tax Reform Bills.

The presidency had particularly referred to Mohammed’s remark, “We will show President Tinubu our true colour,” calling it divisive and unbecoming of a leader.

Responding to the claims, Governor Mohammed said his statement was a call for attention to the negative impact of the proposed tax reforms on Northern Nigeria and a plea for fairness in policymaking.

During a Christmas event in Bauchi, the governor had stated, “Disregarding the voices of the people can lead to unrest. These tax reforms are unfair to Northern Nigeria. How can we meet our obligations, like paying salaries and building infrastructure, when our revenue sources are being diminished? This is unacceptable.”

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, titled “Re: Presidency’s Misleading Statement on Governor Bala Mohammed’s Remarks on Tax Reforms,” the governor clarified that his comments were a cautionary appeal, not a threat.

“It is dishonest to interpret Governor Bala Mohammed’s sincere advice on the risks of harmful policies as a threat to the presidency,” the statement said.

The governor reiterated his respect for President Tinubu’s office and his commitment to fostering dialogue on policies that protect Nigerians, particularly those in economically disadvantaged areas.

He also pointed out that his concerns mirror those of some APC governors who have similarly criticized the proposed tax reforms.

Governor Mohammed called on the presidency to accept constructive feedback as part of governance, rather than framing it as hostility. “We urge the Federal Government to focus on dialogue and inclusiveness instead of resorting to divisive rhetoric and selective criticism,” the statement added.

He reaffirmed his readiness to collaborate with the federal government to address the nation’s challenges and promote equitable development across the country.
