Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has announced an N80,000 minimum wage for civil servants, effective November 1, 2024. This decision comes as part of his administration’s efforts to address the rising cost of living faced by workers in the state.
In addition to the wage increase, Governor Diri approved a hike in monthly pensions for retired workers and allocated N7 billion to help reduce outstanding gratuity liabilities.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, the governor recognized the difficult economic circumstances confronting workers. He emphasized the importance of this wage adjustment in light of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment Act 2024).
“The Prosperity Administration of His Excellency Senator Douye Diri has approved the sum of N80,000 as the minimum wage for state workers to address the harsh economic conditions,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the governor indicated that consequential adjustments for various sectors, agreed upon with labor leadership in the state, will be implemented.
Governor Diri expressed gratitude to the workers and their representatives for their patience and dedication to the government’s policies and initiatives.
