Gani Fawehinmi’s Daughter Attacks Dele Farotimi For Allegedly Defaming Afe Babalola

Bashirat Fawehinmi-Biobaku, the first daughter of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, has criticized human rights activist Dele Farotimi over claims made in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, Vanguard reports

Farotimi accused Aare Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, of influencing the Supreme Court inappropriately.

She expressed her concerns during the 21st Gani Fawehinmi annual lecture held at Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja. Fawehinmi-Biobaku described the allegations as false and damaging, not just to Babalola’s reputation but also to the judiciary’s credibility.

Referencing the controversial case cited in Farotimi’s book, she urged Nigerians to reject falsehoods and focus on recognizing the positive contributions of individuals like Babalola.

She called for continued support for the judiciary and the principles upheld by her late father.

“A recent publication, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System by one Mr. Dele Farotimi, exemplifies this troubling trend. The author maligns not only Aare Afe Babalola but also the sanctity of the Supreme Court and the integrity of the judiciary at large.

“The author hinged his outburst on the case of Major Muritala Gbadamosi Eletu & Ors v. H.R.H. Oba Tijani Akinloye & Ors (2013) 15 NWLR (Pt. 1378) 443. While constructive criticism aimed at reform is welcome, it is crucial to distinguish between genuine calls for improvement and baseless accusations that erode public trust.

“As we honour the ideals of Fawehinmism and the legacy of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, let us reaffirm our commitment to defending the judiciary and its stalwarts. Aare Afe Babalola’s story demonstrates that greatness is achieved through unwavering dedication, integrity, and service to humanity.

“We must resist the temptation to allow false narratives to overshadow the monumental contributions of individuals like Aare Afe Babalola”, she said.

On this imbligio featuring Mr. Delẹ Farotimi and Ch. Afe Babalola, Anyone commenting on it should do so to be on the side of justice However, Nigerians being highly corrupt people of different types with only a few exemptions left, we should pray fervently to the God that is justice and truth to help us resolve this case/issues of injustices in Nigerian Courts especially perpetrated by lawyers and Court Officials. The evils men do really live long after them.
