G20 Summit: President Tinubu Supports Launch of Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty

At the G20 Summit in Brazil, President Bola Tinubu expressed his strong support for the creation of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative spearheaded by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

During the summit’s opening session in Rio de Janeiro, President Tinubu lauded the alliance as a pivotal step in the global fight against hunger and poverty.

“This forward-thinking initiative strengthens Brazil’s leadership in addressing one of the world’s most urgent issues,” Tinubu remarked. “The alliance represents a united global commitment to fighting hunger and poverty, sending a clear message of solidarity to the most vulnerable communities worldwide.”

Tinubu highlighted the alliance’s ability to unite governments, international organizations, and civil society in a comprehensive approach to both immediate and long-term solutions for hunger and poverty.

Reflecting on his administration’s priorities, Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s eagerness to implement international best practices in its developmental agenda. He declared Nigeria’s commitment to joining the Global Alliance, aligning with the country’s strategy to reduce poverty and promote food security through collaboration and resource-sharing.

The President also emphasized that the alliance is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (no poverty) and SDG 2 (zero hunger), which are key elements of Nigeria’s national development goals.

“By partnering with global allies, Nigeria is ready to strengthen its efforts in eradicating poverty and reducing hunger,” he stated, reaffirming Nigeria’s dedication to global sustainable development initiatives.

On the issue of global governance, Tinubu reiterated the importance of reforming the United Nations Security Council, stressing the need to restructure its membership for greater inclusivity, particularly to reflect Africa’s role in global affairs.

“Africa must be prioritized in this reform with two permanent seats, and Nigeria stands ready to represent Africa’s interests,” he said.

Tinubu also commended the G20’s recent decision to grant the African Union permanent membership, an acknowledgment he believes will enhance inclusive dialogue and collaborative efforts to address global challenges.

Furthermore, the President called for reforms in the international financial system, particularly advocating for a fairer global tax structure that supports developing countries. He pointed out that the current tax system disproportionately benefits wealthier nations, especially in digital economies, leaving developing countries at a disadvantage.

Highlighting Nigeria’s recent proposal at the United Nations for a framework on fair taxation, Tinubu urged the G20 to endorse the global South’s call for equitable economic policies.

“Reforming multilateral institutions to better balance the interests of the Global North and South is critical,” Tinubu concluded. “The G20 should lead these efforts, and Nigeria remains committed to supporting these reforms as we work toward achieving the SDG 2030 goals.”
