Tragedy struck at Jattu Market in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State as four people lost their lives and many others sustained injuries when four large trees collapsed during a rainstorm on Monday.
The incident occurred as heavy rainfall and strong winds hit the area, causing the trees to fall simultaneously.
According to Marvellous Zibiri, the chairman of the council, the trees collapsed while people sought shelter underneath them, resulting in fatalities and several injuries.
“We received reports around 9:00 a.m. that four trees had fallen at Jattu Market during the rainstorm,” Mr Zibiri stated, confirming the deaths and ongoing rescue efforts.
“Four bodies have been recovered and taken to the mortuary, while those injured are receiving treatment at the hospital.”
Rescue operations are continuing to ensure no other casualties are trapped under the fallen trees. Mr Zibiri expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and advised residents to avoid seeking shelter under trees during rainstorms.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier forecasted thunderstorms and heavy rains nationwide from Monday to Wednesday, urging the public to take precautionary measures due to potential strong winds accompanying the rains.
