General Godwin Osagie Abbe, a prominent military officer and statesman who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence under the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, has passed away at the age of 74. The retired Major General died on Saturday in Abuja after battling a prolonged illness.
Born on January 10, 1949, Abbe’s life was defined by a distinguished career in both the military and public service. He held key positions, including serving as the military governor of Akwa Ibom State (1988-1990) and Rivers State (1990-1992).
A stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abbe also served as Minister of Interior from 2007 to 2009 during Yar’Adua’s administration.
Abbe’s educational background included a Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He also trained at prestigious institutions such as the United States Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia, and the Ghana Armed Forces Staff College.
His military career was marked by several achievements, including his tenure as General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), and Commandant of the National War College. He retired in 1999 with the rank of Major General.
Reacting to his passing, Senator Monday Okpebholo of Edo State described Abbe as a “legendary son of the state,” noting his discipline, dedication, and service to the nation.
“General Godwin Osagie Abbe was a shining star whose light has been extinguished, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide us,” Senator Okpebholo said in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.
General Abbe’s contributions to Nigeria’s military and public service remain a lasting testament to his commitment to the country.
