Hon. Shima Ayati, a former aide on Human Rights to Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has died at the age of 62.
Ayati passed away on Saturday in Makurdi, Benue State, after a brief illness, according to a statement by his family spokesperson, Mr. Ahangba Ayati.
A prominent grassroots politician and author, Ayati was known for his significant contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape. He served as a close associate of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for four years. However, their partnership was cut short following a political disagreement between Atiku and then-President Olusegun Obasanjo.
In 2003, Ayati was appointed Chairman of the Zaki-Biam Relief Committee under the administration of former Benue State Governor George Akume. During this time, he played a pivotal role in providing relief materials to thousands of Tiv residents displaced by the military invasion of Zaki-Biam.
After retiring from active politics, Ayati focused on his business ventures and lived a quiet life in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.
The family has announced that funeral arrangements will be communicated at a later date.
