The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has reported that floods have claimed 201 lives across 15 states in the country this year.
The affected states include Kano, Jigawa, Bayelsa, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Zamfara, Sokoto, Yobe, Katsina, Niger, Borno, Ebonyi, Kaduna, and Nasarawa.
According to NEMA, Kano State has recorded the highest number of fatalities, followed by Jigawa, Bayelsa, and Bauchi.
The breakdown of deaths by state is as follows: Kano (35), Jigawa (34), Bayelsa (25), Bauchi (23), Adamawa (15), Taraba (15), Zamfara (13), Sokoto (12), Yobe (10), Katsina (7), Niger (5), Borno (2), Ebonyi (2), Kaduna (2), and Nasarawa (1).
The NEMA National Emergency Operations Centre’s dashboard indicates that the floods have impacted 611,201 people across 29 states and 154 local government areas.
The floods have displaced 225,169 individuals, damaged 83,457 homes, injured 2,119 people, and destroyed 115,265 hectares of farmland.
NEMA has also issued warnings about potential flooding in Benue, Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Imo, Rivers, and Bayelsa states and advised other states in the central and southern regions to prepare for possible floods affecting downstream communities.
