Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has revealed that the government is considering turning federal colleges of education into Universities of Education.
The proposal comes as fewer students apply to these colleges, with some enrolling fewer than 1,000 students despite receiving budgetary allocations.
Alausa noted that such colleges are not common in many developed nations and suggested a transformation into universities to meet current educational needs.
During a session with the House of Representatives Committees on Education, the minister explained that the 2025 education budget, which totals N2.5 trillion, will focus on supporting President Bola Tinubu’s education priorities, Vanguard reports.
These include enhancing school accessibility, improving safety in educational environments, and boosting the capabilities of teachers and tertiary institutions.
Alausa also shared that the federal education system includes 54 universities, 36 polytechnics, and 32 colleges of education, with varying allocations in the proposed budget.
Meanwhile, Abubakar Hassan Fulata, Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, emphasized the need for effective use of funds to ensure that academic activities remain uninterrupted and educational standards continue to improve across the country.
